The mayor of Morelia, Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, and his counterpart Hou Gang, from Nanning, China, signed a twinning agreement between both cities in order to strengthen cooperation in areas such as attracting investment, trade, tourism and academic exchanges.
The signing took place at the China-ASEAN Expo and Business and Investment Summit, events taking place in Nanning, southern China’s largest industrial city and a manufacturing base for renewable energy vehicles.
The Asian market’s interest in Michoacan products such as avocado, mango, chili, lemon and mezcal was also a factor in strengthening trade relations between the two cities. The rapprochement between governments began in 2016.
For Martínez Alcázar, this alliance represents a step forward in Morelia’s international relations, bringing the city closer to new commercial and cultural opportunities in one of the most dynamic regions of Asia.
Special guest in China
The China-ASEAN Expo, in its 21st edition, is one of the most important business forums in Southeast Asia, and Morelia is attending as a special guest.
The Michoacan delegation will have a stand where investment opportunities will be promoted and advice on exports and imports will be offered, as well as the exhibition of representative products of the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is comprised of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, representing one of the largest trading blocs in Asia.
During the event, which takes place from September 24 to 28, Morelia is also expected to strengthen ties with ASEAN member countries.
