Nicaraguan activists affirm that the expulsion of the head of the Nicaraguan Mission to the European Union (EU), Zoila Muller, is a clear signal that the international community “is getting tired” of the systematic human rights violations led by Daniel Ortega. At the same time, they warn that the repercussions will be felt even more in the economic sphere.
The lawyer and member of the Political Council of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab), Juan Diego Barberena, affirms that “one of the main conclusions that we can draw from this is that (Daniel) Ortega is being responsible for the diplomatic damage that is leading the Nicaraguan people to the abyss. Ortega is being responsible for the political, social and economic crisis.

Barberena recalls that the EU’s economic cooperation has benefited the country, in addition to being one of Nicaragua’s strongest trading partners. «According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, the European Union has been among the first three external cooperators whose resources enter the General Budget of the Republic in recent years, with this measure by Ortega the execution of approximately 57.67 million is left in limbo. of dollars that were destined and budgeted to be executed in what is still missing in this second semester”, said the jurist in the In Contact program of Article 66.
The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo ordered the expulsion from Nicaragua of the EU ambassador, Bettina Muscheidt, on September 28. The European ambassador arrived in Nicaragua in September 2021, just a year ago, replacing Pelayo Castro.
In his welcoming speech, he said that within his functions is the “main responsibility to continue with the promotion and defense of the values and principles that guide the actions of the European Union and its Member States, inside and outside its borders: respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and respect for human rights.

Faced with this action, the bloc of 27 European countries responded reciprocally to the Nicaraguan regime.
On the other hand, human rights defender Haydée Castle He referred that “the attitude of the regime endangers the sustainability of the people of Nicaragua. We would hope that this decision that the EU has just taken is an example of international dignity and that they can take unilateral decisions that allow the regime to take away all the economic support with which it strengthens its repressive capacity.
The European Union had already warned that the “hostile and unjustified actions” by the Ortega and Murillo dictatorship “will not only affect bilateral relations between Nicaragua and the EU and its member states, but will also lead to greater international isolation of Nicaragua”.
During the mission of his predecessor Pelayo Castro, the EU and some European countries sanctioned relatives and associates of Ortega, including his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, and several of his children, under charges of violating human rights and the democracy.
