Almost three weeks after Hurricane Ian passed through the western end of Cuba, the province of Pinar del Río has achieved the reestablishment of the electrical service of 53.34% of its clients, the Electricity Company of the territory reported this Sunday.
According to a report by the Cuban News Agency, around 125,507 users already have service, while work continues uninterruptedly to complete the recovery in the rest of the province.
Yamilé Ramos Cordero, president of the Provincial Defense Council, assured on Twitter that Mantua has already recovered service for 100% of its clients, while Sandino has taken significant steps forward to restore electricity.
According to a report by Prensa Latina, the municipalities with the most complex situation are San Juan y Martínez and San Luis, provided with generator sets, although they maintain contingents of linemen in all localities.
The official thanked the support and solidarity of 120 brigades and 59 cars from various provinces that participate in the recovery efforts since the impact of the powerful meteorological event, with category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
In addition to the electricity service, the water supply is another of the main concerns in the province, just as was recognized in a meeting held this Saturday with President Miguel Díaz-Canel. At the meeting it was reported that the work on the drivers continues and the distribution of the liquid in pipes and the control measures are reinforced.
Ramos Cordero assured that 5,270 people remain in evacuation centers after the passage of Ian, which left at least 101,401 homes affected. To date, 1,834 have already been rehabilitated and the sale of construction materials and restoration activities continue in sectors such as transportation, education, culture, health and sports.
Likewise, other actions are promoted in the territory, such as the planting of various crops, the securing of the tobacco campaign and the recovery of a thousand hectares of bananas.
On a positive note, this Monday, October 17, undergraduate activities of all study modalities should be resumed at the University of Pinar del Río Hermanos Saíz Montes de Oca.
