More than five thousand new cases of Covid-19 are reported in Chile

The Chilean Ministry of Public Health today reported 5,483 new cases of Covid-19 with a positivity rate of 9.28% and said it was prepared to face this upward trend.

This figure represents an increase in those infected of 47% compared to seven days before and 91 percentage points compared to two weeks ago.

The regions with the highest positivity during the last week are Metropolitan, O’Higgins, Valparaíso and Biobío.

The Metropolitan region has the highest current incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Valparaíso, Magallanes, and Maule.

Chile has accumulated 3,636,993 people infected by the new coronavirus since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. Of these, 24,517 patients are in the active stage.

In terms of deaths, in the last 24 hours there were 12 deaths from causes associated with the disease, for a total of 57,794 in the country.

The undersecretary of Public Health, Cristóbal Cuadrado, stressed that “there is a worse scenario, which we have in sight, and that is that we have an outbreak as large as the one we had with Ómicron during January and February, so that we could reach a number that big of cases. That’s not the most likely scenario.”

He added that the predominant variant in Chile is the BA.2 Ómicron. And he assured: “we are prepared for different scenarios. Both the care network and our testing capacity and the emphasis we are placing on care for the population have all these components of various scenarios.”

Referring to the vaccination campaign, he specified that there are various groups in which they have to continue strengthening the call, and of them “it is still young adults who are not yet attending their second booster or fourth dose vaccination.”
