The humanitarian ship Ocean Viking rescued 92 migrants on Saturday afternoon aboard an “overloaded and deflated” inflatable boat in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, announced the NGO that charters it, SOS Méditerranée, based in the South of France.
Among the people evacuated were “nine women and about 40 unaccompanied minors,” the NGO added on Twitter, attaching photos of the rescue.
The rescued, most of them “exhausted, some with gasoline burns and wounded”, were treated by SOS Méditerranée and a Red Cross team.
Some, too weak to move, had to be carried on stretchers and warmed with blankets.
The central Mediterranean is the world’s most dangerous migration route, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The UN agency estimates 1,417 migrants disappeared in its waters trying to reach Europe in 2022.
