In the first two months of the year alone, more than 90 companies were authorized to export corn to China. They were authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) to sell grain to the Asian country during this period.
With the qualification, the number of companies authorized to export the product to China rises to 446. According to Mapa, the second largest economy on the planet is part of the strategy to boost corn exports, which should break a record this year and may exceed exports from the United States.
In January, Brazilian corn exports rose 167% compared to the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services. China absorbed 15% of Brazilian sales. Until last year, Iran, Japan, Spain and Egypt were the main buyers of corn from Brazil.
Since last year, it has been up to the Ministry of Agriculture to register Brazilian companies that meet the requirements established by China for corn exports. The qualification is part of an agreement closed between the two countries in 2022.
After registration in Brazil, the Ministry of Agriculture sends the list of qualified companies to the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). As soon as the Chinese authorities confirm the list, the companies can ship the grain to that country.
The Ministry of Agriculture offers a website for companies wishing to export maize to China. To obtain qualification, companies must access the ministry’s website.
