More than 8,000 traffic accidents are registered in Cuba from January to October

MADRID, Spain.- Between the months of January and October 2022, the Cuban authorities registered a total of 8,187 traffic accidents on the island, which caused the death of 566 people and injured another 6,175.

According to the data shared by the official media workersat the end of October the accident rate indicators in the country showed an increasing trend in relation to the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.

The information highlights the high number of accidents in which the motorized, vehicle that has become fashionable on the Island in recent years.

“The irruption on the road of just over 100,000 motorcycles and mopeds, together with the indiscipline of their drivers, has contributed to the fact that these means are present in 43% of accidents, 28% of deaths and 21% of the injured, registering growth compared to 2021 of 29% of accidents and 34% of victims”, he specifies workers.

On several occasions, Cubans have denounced that among the main causes of traffic accidents in Cuba are the poor state of the roads and the aging vehicle fleet, in addition to those cited by the official media, such as the lack of attention from drivers, violation of the right of way and speeding.

Given the proximity of the year-end festivities, which are associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages and a greater displacement, the authorities called for not driving during the entire early morning in case of long trips; as well as abide by speed limits.

According to the secretary of the National Highway Commission, Reinaldo Becerra, “only the responsible behavior of drivers, pedestrians and passengers will lead to a reduction in road accidents, a negative phenomenon in the country.”
