More than $8 million is needed to repair the damage from the landslide in Quito

Affected families will receive a contingency bonus. It is not yet explained where the people with total losses will be relocated.

On the afternoon of this February 8, 2022, the Municipality of Quito reported that with the support of the National Government will invest $8,413,820.31 in rehabilitation and recovery of the Zone Zero affected by the alluvium which left 28 dead, in The communeon January 31, 2022.

Jaime Bucheli, manager of the Metropolitan Security Company (EmSeguridad), pointed out that activities are contemplated in the short, medium and long term: the term of execution of medium-term actions is 90 days, counted from February 9, while they evaluate the progress of other activities “which by their nature require a long-term intervention term«.

First activities

  • Provision of cleaning kits, personal hygiene, clothing, household items
  • Coordination for the delivery of non-perishable food kits and prepared foods
  • Implementation of citizen attention points to survey needs for the management of the registry and update of the census of affected people, people with disabilities, priority attention groups, gender and culture
  • Management of inclusion and promotion of rights

emergency fund

During a presentation, Buchelli explained that the emergency fund will go to:

  • Assistance food for victims and affected (non-perishable food kits per family)
  • Basic emergency non-food assistance:
  • kit of clothing essential
  • kits school (backpack, school supplies, uniforms)
  • kit of cleanliness
  • Medicines not covered by the Comprehensive Public Health Network or by Insurer (consequence of the emergency)
  • replenishment of household goods (up to 6 unified basic salaries) that is $2,500
  • property repair (construction materials for up to 10 unified basic salaries); that is, up to $4,250.
  • This will be done for 15 days and it will be evaluated who continues to require the aid and who does not. “We will help them proportional to the impact they had,” Bucheli added.

It was also detailed that there are 29 vehicles rescued by the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) and that the care of affected vehicles will be done through private sector actors.

In addition, a point will be established at Ground Zero to receive needs, although it was not specified where it will be.

  • Immediate solution for renting and/or buying homes. “It has been defined in these months that they will be relocated, if they want to move to another area (the people) and they will collaborate by paying the rent for the first months until they stabilize,” Buchelli said without further details.
  • Delivery of contingency bonus for affected people
  • Study for the implementation of permanent barriers as means of protection in private infrastructure
