However, the results are not arriving and this was recognized by the Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch.
“Extortion is a crime that has not registered a decrease as we expect, which is why constant operations are being carried out every week with the local prosecutor’s offices, but also with the institutions of the Security Cabinet,” said the secretary.
According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, extortion shows an increase of 23% compared to 2018.
And the figures could be even higher, since it is a crime that is not reported in the country due to fear of suffering some type of retaliation.
The National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Security (ENVIPE) reveals that extortion is the second crime with the highest black figure with 97%, only behind kidnapping with 98%.
The blows
Although crime has not been reduced, the federal government has dealt some blows to crime.
“Since we implemented the National Strategy against Extortion, on July 6, on the instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum, more than 102,800 calls have been received on the unique complaint number 089 and more than 600 people linked to this crime have been arrested in 22 states of the Republic,” García Harfuch reported last Thursday.
Of the 102,800 calls received, 77,428 (75%) were unconsummated extortions, and 10,854 were completed extortions.
For the crime of extortion, 3,684 investigation files have been opened in the local Prosecutor’s Offices.
Regarding arrests, some priority objectives have been achieved. In October, Rigoberto “N” was arrested, identified as the leader of a criminal cell dedicated to collecting fees and extorting citrus growers in Michoacán; Jonathan “N”, leader of the criminal cell “Los Torrijos” in the State of Mexico and Edgar “N”, alias “Limones”, member of the criminal organization “Los Cabrera” in Durango.
“From July 6 to November 30, within the framework of the National Strategy against Extortion, in coordinated actions of the Security Cabinet, with the support of local authorities from 22 states of the Republic, 615 people have been arrested for the crime of extortion,” García Harfuch reported.
The security cabinet has carried out operations against extortion in the State of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Mexico City, Michoacán and Tamaulipas.
