More than 500 pieces of Colombian history and literature will be auctioned in Bogotá

Next to the Jiménez de Quesada manuscript from 1558, a letter from the illustrious philologist Rufino José Cuervo stands out, as well as several lots about the liberator Simón Bolívar, Francisco de Paula Santander and Antonio Nariño -heroes of Colombian independence-, which They include documents, medals, portraits and engravings.

Bogotá Auctions added in a statement that the theme of the auction includes topics such as Colombian and universal literature, to colonial and republican manuscripts; colonial and modern history of Latin America, including military history, science, religion, and geography.

Among the historical documents is a private archive of Estanislao Vergara y Sanz de Santamaría, who collaborated as a minister in the governments of Simón Bolívar, Francisco de Paula Santander and Rafael Urdaneta.

Additionally, the auction house will seek the highest bidders for several lots on Bolívar, Santander and Nariño, which include documents, medals, portraits and engravings.

The auction also includes books and documents related to Mexico and Central America.highlighting a section on Mayan history and another on Emperor Maximilian.

Also included is a collection of five lithographs by Torres Méndez, “in the very rare Bogotá edition,” says Timothée de Saint Albin, expert director of the department of books, documents and antique maps at Bogotá Auctions.

One of the curiosities of this auction is the Ex libris found on some of the books, such as that of the Spanish bookseller and collector Luis Bardon. These ownership marks give an account of the owners who had some of these books and give clues about their history.

Camilo Páez, senior expert in the book department of Bogotá Auctions, said that within the pieces there are unique documents such as “The unique letter from Rufino José Cuervo to his friend Miguel Antonio Caro in February 1892, which is not found in the epistolaries published to date and which had remained in a private collection until now.”

On the other hand, there is a topographic map of Bogotá, prepared by Carlos Clavijo in 1891, which has a detailed guide to offices, addresses of houses and establishments in the city of Bogotá, among which is a census of chicherías.

A copy of the first edition of ‘La vorágine’ is also available to the public, a novel that is 100 years old, a classic of 20th century Latin American literature.

Its author, the lawyer José Eustasio Rivera (1888-1928), finished writing it on April 21, 1924 and published it on November 24 of the same year with a success that gave him rapid international recognition.
