MIAMI, United States. — A total of 4,241 Cuban migrants requested refuge in Brazil between the months of January and November of last year, reported the newspaper Folha.
The data was collected by the Observatory of International Migrations of Brazil (OBMigra) at the request of the São Paulo newspaper itself.
The number of refugee requests from Cubans in Brazil during 2022 is higher than that registered prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, when a large number of doctors from the Caribbean country decided to settle in the South American giant after the end of the “More Doctors” program. .
Cubans were the second nationality with the most requests for refuge, only surpassed by Venezuelans.
Folha highlights that there are several reasons that make Brazil an attractive alternative for the nationals of the Caribbean island. The newspaper points out that the South American country is a cheaper destination than others, such as the United States, and that Brazilian immigration law is also favorable, since, when requesting asylum, immigrants receive a protocol that allows them to find work, healthcare and other rights while the application is analyzed by the competent bodies, a process that can take years.
Despite the high number of refugee applications, Folha points out that it is not yet possible to determine how many of these Cubans are still in Brazil.
Since Cuba reopened its borders after the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of thousands of Cubans have left the country to settle in other latitudes. The country that has received the most migrants from the Island has been the United States, with 284,431 income only by border between October 2021 and November 2022.
