MÉRIDA, Mexico.- Specialists from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) have recorded more than 300 replicas after the earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale, which occurred this Monday 35 kilometers southwest of the town of Chivirico, head of the municipality of Guamá, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at CENAIS, reported in his profile Facebook that of the 318 aftershocks detected, at least seven have been perceptible by Cubans.
According to the specialist, since the magnitude 6 and 6.7 earthquakes occurred on November 10, 2024, a total of 8,482 aftershocks have been recorded.
Of that number, 137 have been reported as presumably perceptible.
In the early hours of this Monday, the earthquake of magnitude 6.1 was perceived not only in the five eastern provinces, but also in Camaguey and Ciego de Ávila, according to local reports.
According to Enrique Diego Arango Arias, this earthquake is not related to the aftershocks of the earthquake that previously occurred in Pilón. However, landslides have been recorded in the Babujal area, in the municipality of Guamá, Santiago de Cuba.
Block falls on slopes of a sector of the Granma highway, which borders the south-eastern coast linking the town of Pilón with the city of Santiago de Cuba, also occurred after the earthquake.
Likewise, in Providencia, province of Granma, some homes that already had structural damage due to previous earthquakes, suffered additional minor damage.
This recent tremor adds to a series of significant seismic movements that have impacted eastern Cuba between November and December, accumulating 137 perceptible earthquakes so far this year.
Local authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the region and have urged the population to remain alert and follow the instructions of civil protection agencies.
