In total, the state recorded 268 travel-related cases of chikungunya throughout the year.

MIAMI, United States. – Florida health authorities reported that from December 21 to 27, 18 cases of chikungunya associated with international travel and one case of dengue also linked to travel were confirmed, while Miami-Dade remained among the counties under “alert” for diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.

In the cumulative 2025, Florida record 268 travel-related cases of chikungunya and 416 cases of imported dengue.

The most relevant data for the Cuban community and for the flow of travelers between both countries is the origin of a majority of these imported infections: the state report itself states that, of the 268 cases of chikungunya associated with travel reported in 2025, 256 correspond to people with a history of travel to Cuba.

In dengue, the report includes a breakdown by country of exposure that totals 305 cases linked to Cuba among the 416 imported during the year.

In the specific case of Miami-Dade, the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) reported 169 cases of travel-associated chikungunya and 261 cases of imported dengue throughout 2025. In addition, the county is among the territories with local transmission of dengue on the East Coast: Florida recorded 62 cases of locally acquired dengue in 2025, of which 25 are attributed to Miami-Dade.

The Florida report refers to the health advisories for travelers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which keeps Cuba included in its updated global advisory on dengue, indicating an elevated or unusual risk for travelers and recommending prevention of mosquito bites.

The CDC too have identified a “higher than expected” number of dengue cases among American travelers returning from certain countries, including Cuba.
