MIAMI, United States. — More than 220,000 Cubans entered the United States through the border with Mexico during fiscal year 2022, which ended on September 30.
The figure, released by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicates that the number of Cubans who were intercepted in the northern country amounted to 224,607.
The peak of Cubans who entered the US through the southern border was recorded in the months of March and April, with 32,153 and 34,839, respectively.
In the following months, the entry of Cubans decreased slightly, with a rebound of 26,178 last September.
Of the 224,607 Cubans registered by CBP, 168,286 were single adults, another 51,652 adults arrived with partners or relatives, and 966 were minors.
This is the largest exodus recorded in Cuba in the last six decades, surpassing by a large majority the 120,000 who arrived in the United States during the Mariel exodus and the little more than 30,000 who arrived during the rafter crisis of the years 90 of the last century.
Along with the more than 220,000 Cubans who entered the United States through the border with Mexico, thousands more tried to arrive by sea through the Straits of Florida. However, more than 6,000 of them were deported.
Cubans were the nationals of the region that brought the most illegal immigration to the United States in the recently concluded fiscal year, surpassing Hondurans (213,023), Venezuelans (187,716), Nicaraguans (163,876), Colombians (125,172) and Salvadorans. (97,030).
The sum of the number of migrants from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, the only countries on the continent governed by totalitarian regimes, exceeds half a million (572,500).
