MIAMI, United States. – In the Pinar del Río municipality of San Luis, one of the most affected by the passage of Hurricane Ian“all tobacco has effects”, according to a report on facebook from the official channel Tele Pinar.

According to this source, it is estimated that some 220 tons of tobacco are affected only in the selected V 13-26.

On a tour of San Luis, one of the meccas of Cuban tobacco along with San Juan and Martínez, the president of the Tabacuba Group, Marino Murillo Jorge, said that there was “not one natural cure house left standing in the province.”

After Ian passed through Pinar del Río territory in the early hours of Tuesday, it transpired that the province’s tobacco plantations, the best in Cuba, were among the most affected areas.

Although the damage to the plantations was not the worst possible because the leaf planting season has not yet started, the tobacco houses were devastated, which will probably be an obstacle for the harvest next April.

One of the largest tobacco picks in the municipality of San Luis was left unusable after Ian passed, according to the photos published on social networks by the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso.

Ian’s step too caused “a real disaster” at the El Pinar farm (San Luis), where Alejandro Robaina cultivated for decades the tobacco used to roll the famous Cuban cigar.

Although the Cuban government has not offered specific data on the damage caused by Hurricane Ian as it passed through the island, in preliminary statements it indicated that the houses, fields, tobacco crops and roads suffered the main damages, as well as the National Electric System and telephone lines.

“The damage is considerable. There are damages to homes, tobacco houses, interrupted roads, fallen trees,” said the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Yamilé Ramos.
