More than 15 Nicaraguans died in the United States in June 2023

Eighteen Nicaraguans lost their lives in the month of June in the United States, that is the figure reported by the organization Texas Nicaraguan Community, which has compiled and reported on the deaths of compatriots in the North American country.

The last Nicaraguan who died in the northern country was identified as Joel Mairena, 34. He died from a stroke. He was admitted to an Illinois hospital in Chicago. He was originally from San José de Bocay, department of Jinotega.

Causes of death

The largest number of Nicaraguan deaths was due to traffic accidents, heart attacks and apparent suicides. Of the 18 compatriots who perished in the last days of May and June, five died in traffic accidents, two of which were pedestrians.

Five others died from sudden heart attacks, one of them was in Migration custody and close to being deported. Four more were found dead in their rooms and the cause of the deaths has not yet been determined. Unofficially it became known that some of these cases were determined to be suicide.

One more case was counted as suicide, one lost his life by submersion and the last by a stroke. Only on the 10th of that month two deaths were reported. Both cases due to heart attacks.

Places of provenance

Jinotega is the department where four of the deceased compatriots come from; two from Bilwi, in Puerto Cabezas, two from Managua, one from Ocotal; another from Estelí, one more from Diriamba and five more whose place of origin has not been determined.

All the deceased were men between the ages of 24 and 58, the oldest, and at least 10 of them were in the age range of 30 to 38 years.

Only two were repatriated and one of them was buried in the United States. His relatives decided to donate the organs. The other Nicaraguans have not yet been brought to the country due to the high cost involved in carrying out this process, so in all cases their mourners opened accounts to raise funds.
