More than 14 thousand classrooms closed in France by Covid-19

According to a report by the entity, last week there were 9,202 classes without receiving students, out of a total of 527,200 throughout the country.

Regarding classrooms closed due to the absence of teachers, these represent 2.7 percent, in a scenario aggravated by the most contagious Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Before Christmas, the unopened classes did not reach three thousand, so the dramatic increase two weeks after the course resumed responds to the rise of the aforementioned mutation, dominant in France since the end of last year.

The government has modified several times the health protocols in schools, colleges and high schools, under the argument of keeping them open, without its policy convincing several of the actors in education.

The day before, tens of thousands of teachers, managers, support staff and parents of students took to the streets of this capital and other cities, in a day of national strike in the field of education to denounce what they described as government mismanagement of the pandemic in the sector.

Called by a dozen education unions, the strike led to the closure of many classes, without matching the numbers of people who accompanied the protest disclosed by the executive and the organizers, the latter higher.

New mobilizations are expected on January 20, despite Prime Minister Jean Castex’s call for dialogue and promises to improve the security situation in schools in the face of Covid-19, with measures such as the delivery of FFP2 masks to teachers.

At the center of the criticism is the French Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, who in the last few hours acknowledged mistakes and presented his excuses, although the government confirmed its confidence in him.
