Some 10,500 nurses who have been on strike in New York since January 12 reached an agreement with hospitals on Monday that provides for a salary increase of more than 12% over three years, the union announced.
Nurses at private hospital groups Montefiore and Mount Sinai in New York will vote to ratify the agreement and return to work this week, the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) said in a statement.
However, about 4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital were not included in the agreement and will remain on strike.
In addition to salary increases, the new agreements include protection measures against workplace violence, safeguards against the rise of artificial intelligence, and protection for immigrant and transgender patients and nurses.
According to the union, this was the largest nurses’ strike in the history of New York. Hospital centers had discharged or transferred several patients, canceled some surgeries and hired temporary staff.
