Unemployment rate stood at 8.4% in August without showing major changes, according to the INE
The increase was 0.1 percentage points compared to the July measurement. There are 158,700 unemployed people.
The unemployment rate in Uruguay stood at 8.4% of the economically active population in August, 0.1 percentage points above the July measurement, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Wednesday. This means that 158,700 people were unemployed in Uruguay in August. As is often the case, the unemployment rate is lower in Montevideo (7.7%) than in the rest of the country (8.8%). On the other hand, the INE indicated that the employment rate also increased slightly in August, standing at 59.1% against 58.8% in July. The activity rate increased by the same amount: it stood at 64.5% in August against 64.2% in July. CPA Ferrere economist Nicolás Cichevski stressed that the labor market “maintained its dynamism” during the past month, and compared that the unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points compared to August 2023.
