More deaths than births: the figures of demography in Cuba

COVID-19, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The massive exodus registered in Cuba is accompanied by an almost worse problem: more people are dying on the island than are born. This was indicated by an investigation carried out by the Center for Demographic Studies (CED) of the University of Havana (UH) that offered data collected in 2021.

During the past year, the Island registered the lowest number of births (99,096) and the highest number of deaths (167,645) in the last 60 years, a situation that brought with it the reduction of the population in all the provinces.

The researchers maintain that the numbers were marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which triggered the death figures, while, for the same reason, there was a contraction in the birth rate.

The study, to which the Cuban News Agency (ACN)reflects that, of the 168 municipalities of the Island, 159 reduced their number of inhabitants.

The low levels of fertility registered in the country continue to be a problem, a symptom of the economic crisis and the lack of material solvency of Cubans to support a family project.

According to the Center for Demographic Studies of the University of Havana, in 2021 “Cuba reached very low levels of fertility, equivalent to 44 years below generational replacement.”

The study also indicates that the strengthening of demographic aging levels continues: 21.6 in 2021 by 21.3 in 2020. There was also a decrease in the number of inhabitants, with a total of 11.1 million , a figure notably higher than the 11.26 registered in the 2012 Population and Housing Census, the last one carried out in the country.
