The Federal Police (PF) arrested, this Friday (2), Filipe Martins, former–International Affairs advisor to former president Jair Bolsanaro. The operation was carried out in Ponta Grossa (PR), where Martins had been under house arrest since last Saturday (27). The former advisor was sentenced to 21 years in prison for participating in the coup plot.
The preventive detention was authorized by the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes. Last Tuesday (30), the judge ordered Martins’ defense to speak out about possible non-compliance with precautionary measures imposed on the defendant.
“Filipe Garcia Martins Pereira failed to comply with precautionary measures imposed when he used his social networks, even though he knew he was prohibited from using them. These circumstances alone demonstrate the defendant’s contempt for the measures imposed and for the legal system itself, as he does not respect the rules and does not comply with court decisions,” said Moraes.
Defense
In a video, Filipe Martins’ lawyer, Jeffrey Chiquini, denied that the former advisor had failed to comply with any precautionary measure. “I was doing it in an exemplary way,” he said.
“He never received any warning, he was never admonished for failing to comply with any court order”, he added, assessing that Martins was punished “without having done anything wrong”.
“Today, the STF puts into practice what they have wanted since 2019, when Filipe Martins was selected as leader of the hate cabinet. Today, Alexandre de Moraes puts into practice what he has always wanted: to arrest Filipe Martins. It is not a precautionary measure, it is a measure of revenge. This is, evidently, the beginning of serving the sentence”, he concluded.
