The office of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), stated this Tuesday (13) that all procedures carried out to request information from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) within the scope of the investigations investigating the dissemination of fake news and the actions of digital militias during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The statement was released after the newspaper S.Paulo Newspaper publish a report in which he says that Moraes used “unofficial means” to order the production of information to investigate Bolsonaro’s allies during the 2022 elections, a period in which the minister was president of the TSE.
According to Moraes’ office, the TSE has police powers and can carry out the research.
“The office of Minister Alexandre de Moraes clarifies that, during the course of the investigations of Inquiry (INQ) 4781 (Fake News) and INQ 4878 (digital militias), under the terms of the rules, several determinations, requests and requests were made to numerous bodies, including the Superior Electoral Court, which, in the exercise of police power, has the authority to prepare reports on illicit activities, such as disinformation, electoral hate speech, attempted coup d’état and attacks on democracy and institutions”, says an excerpt from the note.
The minister also clarified, through his office, that the reports only described illegal posts on social media and were sent for investigation by the Federal Police.
“All procedures were official, regular and are duly documented in the inquiries and investigations underway at the STF, with full participation from the Attorney General’s Office”, concludes the note.
