The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes authorized today (7) the testimony of the former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District Anderson Torres in the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of the Anti-democratic Acts of the Chamber Federal District Legislature (CLDF). The hearing is scheduled for next Thursday (9), at 10 am.
According to the decision, Torres must have assured the parliamentarians the right to silence if they prefer not to respond to questions from district deputies.
However, due to the fact that the former minister is in prison, his presence in the deposition will be optional. Moraes explained in the decision that the STF recently prohibited coercive conduction for interrogations.
“I note, however, that the conduct of Anderson Torres, who is under preventive detention, must be carried out under police escort and will only occur if there is prior agreement, since this Supreme Court has declared the unconstitutionality of coercive conduct of investigated or defendants for interrogations and depositions”, he decided.
Moraes’ decision was motivated by an appeal filed by the lawyers of the Legislative Chamber after Anderson Torres’ defense asked for waiver of testimony.
Anderson Torres is being investigated for alleged failure to contain the anti-democratic acts of January 8. He was arrested on January 14, upon arrival in Brazil.
He was in the United States, where he said he went on vacation a week after taking over as Secretary of Public Security for the Federal District. His departure from the country occurred days before the coup acts, when vandals invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília.
