Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized this Friday (12) former president Jair Bolsonaro to leave prison to undergo surgery at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasília.
The exit will not be immediate. The former president’s defense must inform the scheduled date for the procedure.
Bolsonaro is imprisoned at the Federal Police Superintendence (PF), where he is serving a definitive sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for his conviction in the criminal action for the coup plot.
Authorization was granted by the minister after a report from the PF confirms that the former president has a bilateral inguinal hernia and needs surgery “as soon as possible.
The examination was carried out on Wednesday (17), at the headquarters of the National Institute of Criminalistics, in Brasília. The procedure was determined by the minister after the defense requested authorization for the surgery and requested house arrest due to his state of health.
House arrest
In the same decision, Moraes denied a new request for house arrest to Bolsonaro.
The minister said that the former president can receive private medical care without judicial authorization and there is a PF team to assist him in case of emergency.
“The defendant is in custody in a location that is absolutely close to the private hospital where he receives emergency health care – closer, in fact, than his home address – so that there is no harm in the event of the eventual need for emergency travel,” said Moraes.
