Montevideo will improve road circulation in areas with traffic congestion

The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, participated in the activity. The technical presentation was given by Justo Onandi, Boris Goloubintseff and Gustavo Arbiza, with the participation of the director of the Mobility Department, Pablo Inthamoussu.

The hierarch highlighted the work of the Mobility team and thanked the clear directives of Mayor Cosse “who told us that we have to find the way, we have to dodge, jump over obstacles and this is part of that.”

The initiative integrates the plan Montevideo goes aheadthrough which the Intendancy will carry out important works that will generate urban infrastructure and sources of employment.

The areas included in the plan are mobility, urban development and environment. The works will be financed with a short-term loan.

To give continuity to vehicular circulation in conflict zones, an intervention plan will be implemented. The identification of these zones was carried out through a mobility data consolidation platform created by the Municipality, with contributions from Waze, the Metropolitan Transportation System (STM) and the Mobility Management Center (CGM).

This platform allows you to see the state of traffic congestion on the different traffic routes.

One of them is the placement at traffic lights of devices that have a fully adaptive artificial intelligence software.

It is a traffic light management mode that adapts very quickly to traffic demands, through a dense mesh of sensors installed on the roads and a network optimization system through the permanent modification of traffic light times.

In the first stage it will be applied in Traffic lights in the Tres Cruces neighborhood and the Obelisk area, on Artigas Boulevard and the Nuevo Centro shopping center.

Tres Cruces is a nerve center of the city, which concentrates bus terminal, shopping center and health centers. More than 3,000 buses and 300,000 people circulate there per day and there are recurring congestion situations.

Later it will continue in the Punta Carretas, Pocitos, Buceo, Malvín, Cerro, Piedras Blancas, Unión, La Blanqueada, Cordón and Aguada neighborhoods.

The software will work as follows: it will receive information on vehicle flow and pedestrian traffic, which will be sent to the Mobility Management Center of the Intendancy almost instantaneously, since every three seconds will update what happens.

In this way it they will be able to adapt the times in which the lights of the traffic lights changeaccording to traffic demand.

New devices that will send traffic data will be incorporated: 34 exit sensors, 11 entry sensors and 6 new monitoring cameras.

These will be added to the existing components: 13 signalized intersections, 13 vehicle counting sensors and 5 monitoring cameras (CCTV).

On the other hand, a new signalized intersection will be created at Avenida Italia and Presidente Berro, with the installation of a two-phase equipment.

In addition, left turns will not be allowed from Avenida Italia and parking will be prohibited on Artigas Boulevard, between Ponce and Palmar (north direction), from Monday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A prohibited parking enforcement system will also be installed using video cameras at strategic points in the city.
