Monteverde launches “Every life tells a story” campaign to collect testimonies of family separation from displaced Nicaraguans

The opposition organization Nicaraguan Democratic Concertation (CDN-Monteverde) launched, starting this November 19, the campaign “Every life tells a story”, with which it seeks to get Nicaraguans in political and economic exile around the world to share their experiences and feelings away from their families.

With this campaign, according to Eliseo Núñez, member of the board of directors of Monteverde, during a press conference, the opposition organization shows its closeness “to the pain that families experience inside and outside of Nicaragua, faced with the impossibility of returning to their country to celebrate Christmas traditions.

The activity tries to bring together in a sentimental way the hundreds of thousands of compatriots who have been forced to leave their families behind, some for political reasons and others for economic reasons but in the end all forced by the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship.

«Nicaragua is suffering the largest exodus in its history. Since 2018, more than 900,000 Nicaraguans have left their homeland for multiple reasons, including political persecution, exile, the prohibition of entering the country and the need to seek job or study opportunities that the Ortega Murillo regime denies. He highlighted the political organization created in exile.

Family separation due to exile has caused emotional wounds in Nicaraguans.

Likewise, he recalled that, Nicaraguans, “we carry the weight of separation and suffer the absence of at least one loved one” and for this reason, CDN wants to contribute to the construction of the “historical memory of the feelings and longings” of Nicaraguans affected by family separation, especially at Christmas time and the end of the year, which is when homesickness arises the most because these holidays promote unity and family reunions.

To record the suffering that also affects Nicaraguans forced to leave their country, CDN has created a virtual space so that Nicaraguans around the world can send their stories.

“We invite Nicaraguans, no matter where they are, to leave us their testimony completely anonymously,” said Núñez.

“Each life has a story, a longing and a different suffering, which is causing a wound that will leave scars in our society and will take decades to heal,” the opposition organization reiterated.

Likewise, they point out that they trust that this effort will raise awareness among all compatriots about the “high emotional cost” that Nicaraguans as a society are paying “for the serious violations of human rights committed by the Ortega Murillo regime.”

The initiative must help us all “build a historical memory that in the future will prevent us from traveling down this path again,” Núñez added.

The campaign will be in force for the next six weeks through different independent media and in the CDN platforms.
