Monterrey advanced this Saturday to the final of the Apertura 2024 tournament of the Liga MX after beating Atlético de San Luis 5-1 at home with a double from Spaniard Oliver Torres in the definition of the semifinal series.

The “Rayados” of Monterrey advanced to the title match with an aggregate score of 6-3 after losing the first leg 2-1.

In the match played at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey, the local team came close to scoring in the 37th minute with a header from Colombian John Stefan Medina that brushed past the right post.

Monterrey continued to dominate and press, and once again put Atlético de San Luis’ goal in danger with a header from Argentine Lucas Ocampos that passed very close to the crossbar.

The team led by Argentine Martín Demichelis scored the first goal in the 47th minute with a powerful shot by Torres inside the area, hitting the ball close to the left post after a defensive rebound.

Monterrey’s second goal fell in the 52nd minute when naturalized Mexican Argentine Germán Berterame scored from the right after goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez rejected a shot from Spaniard Sergio Canales.

Atlético de San Luis scored in the 75th minute with a penalty scored by Frenchman Sebastien Salles-lamonge after the referee declared the maximum penalty after reviewing the play in the VAR where defender Héctor Moreno pushed Brazilian Vitinho into the area.

When Atlético de San Luis was playing better, Monterrey scored the third goal in the 82nd through defender Daniel Guillén, who put the ball into his own goal while trying to deflect a corner kick.

Three minutes later, Torres scored his double with a powerful shot from outside the area after a defensive rebound.

In stoppage time Monterrey’s fifth goal fell thanks to a powerful shot by Brandon Vázquez at the entrance to the area in the 91st minute.

In this way, Monterrey will face the winner of the series between the current champion América and Cruz Azul in the final, which will be defined on Sunday. In the first leg they tied without goals.
