The president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Miguel Cabrejosquestioned the behavior of the congressmen of the Republic in the midst of the political and social crisis facing the country.
In statements to RPP, Cabrejos was in favor of bringing forward the next legislature of the Parliamentas announced by its owner, José Williams, in order to speed up the processing of the new general elections.
“That early election has to happen as soon as possible. The Legislative and Executive powers must be assumed and considered in transition,” he said.
In this context, he questioned that congressmen are “on vacation” while acts of violence are taking place in the country. This alludes to the fact that parliamentarians are currently in Representation Week until next Tuesday, January 24.

“I think the advancement of elections is a clamor. They say they are on vacation but how can there be a vacation when your home is burning politically and physically? Peru is burning. Bring forward the legislature, commit to a specific election date and have them considered in transition. Right now we cannot selfishly think: ‘I need my salary, my job’. We owe Peru to ourselves, ”he stressed.
The head of the CEP also added that the bishops of Peru “in assembly, we have decided that if they ask us to mediate, build bridges between the Legislative, Executive, civil society and the groups that protest, we are willing to talk with everyone ”.
