The Bolivian Episcopal Conference (CEB) communicated this Saturday the death of Monsignor Luis Sainz Hinojosa, Archbishop Emeritus and Auxiliary Bishop of Cochabambaat 86 years old.

“The clergy of this city and its pastors are in mourning and they ask their faithful to raise a prayer for their eternal rest”, Indicates the information, which anticipates the wake from this afternoon, in the Metropolitan Cathedral “San Sebastián” de la Llajta.

He was born in Tiquipaya Cochabamba on June 21, 1936. He became part of the Franciscans and professed in the Franciscan Order on January 17, 1961 and was ordained a priest in his hometown on August 26, 1963.

On May 8, 1982, was appointed by Juan Pablo Segundo as Auxiliary Bishop of Cochabamba and received episcopal consecration on June 31 of the same year.

Subsequently, the Supreme Pontiff appointed Monsignor Sainz as Archbishop of La Paz, on February 23, 1987, being installed in the hierarchical position on April 19 of the same year. On August 1, 1996, he had to resign from his role as Archbishop of La Paz.

He also served as Auxiliary Archbishop of Cochabamba. In 2001, John Paul II rehabilitated it and reappoints Monsignor Sainz as Auxiliary Bishop of Cochabamba, emphasizing the “valid reinforcement of the invaluable work” carried out by Archbishop Tito Solari and his assistant Monsignor Angel Gelmi. The titular see assigned to Monsignor Sainz was that of Giunca di Mauritania.

He served as Vicar General of the Archdiocese and episcopal vicar of Valle Bajo and Valle Alto, rector of the Sanctuary of Urkupiña.

Luis Sainz was president of the Human Promotion Area, president of the Episcopal Commission for Education and president of the Archdiocesan Delegation of Social Communication.

After turning 75 on August 29, 2012, the Holy Father Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of the position presented by Monsignor Luis Sainz Hinojosa OFMTitular Archbishop of Giunca of Mauritania, in accordance with canons 411 and 401 of the Code of Canon Law.
