Monsalve in two directions: responds to the CAM “that we do not accept threats” and summons the Interior to explain the phone call from Minister Jeanette Vega to Llaitul

The Defense Minister, maya fernandezand the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, arrived this Thursday morning in the Biobío region, with the aim of leading a coordination committee in Concepción. The arrival of the authorities occurs one day after the arrest of the leader of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), Hector Llaitulin Cañete, after an order from the Prosecutor’s Office.

Fernández and Monsalve arrived around 11:00 a.m. at the Regional Presidential Delegation of Biobío. There they met with representatives of the police, Armed Forces and authorities in the area, to evaluate the State of Exception in force in the provinces of Biobío and Arauco, in the Biobío region, and throughout La Araucanía.

Let us remember that Llaitul’s arrest occurred within the framework of an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office that began in 2020, after the Government of Sebastián Piñera filed a complaint under the State Security Law (LSE).

The Public Ministry charges Llaitul with several crimes: wood theft, violent usurpation, attack against authority and calls for the destabilization of the Government, conduct framed in the LSE.

The detention control hearing of the accused is taking place in the Temuco Guarantee Court.

Response to CAM statement

Undersecretary Monsalve responded to a CAM statement, in which they indicated that Llaitul’s arrest marks “a turning point for the Mapuche revolutionary autonomist movement.”

Monsalve maintained that “the Government of Chile does not accept threats. These threats are directed, they are not in the air, they affect specific people and that is why today’s meeting is so important, which demonstrates the will to coordinate all the capacities that the State has to guarantee security conditions.

“We are going to use all the capabilities we have to guarantee security conditions. There is someone in front who does not want these security conditions and therefore it seems to us that the best mechanism to prevent this from happening is for the people who commit these crimes to be arrested and prosecuted, “he added.

“We hope that together with this success in terms of criminal prosecution, of the Public Ministry and the Investigative Police, we hope to have other successes and the government will collaborate,” added the authority.

Social Development Call to Llaitul

The middle ex ante revealed on Thursday that Tania Santisadviser to the Minister of Social Development, Jeanette Vega -who assumed the interministerial coordination of the South Macrozone in April-, made a call to Llaitul on May 11. As can be seen in the transcript of the call (contained in a confidential PDI report), the objective was for the CAM leader to speak with Vega.

“She (Minister Vega) asked me (to see) the possibility of contacting you and seeing the possibility of being able to have a conversation with you right now, by phone,” Santis told Llaitul.

The CAM leader asked Santis where he got his number. Later, he said to talk to him on Whatsapp.

That May 11, the middle Werken News broadcast an interview with Llaitul, in which he criticizes the “intermediate state”, a measure considered by the Government of the President Gabriel Boric to avoid the State of Exception in the provinces of Biobío and Arauco, in the Biobío region, and throughout La Araucanía.

When asked about the event, Undersecretary Monsalve commented that “at this time I have no record of the contacts you mention. I am not aware of the police or other State institutions and, obviously, if that were the case, we are available to clarify it.”

“It seems to me a fact that the Ministry of the Interior has to become aware of and deepen, but I do not have the elements to answer your question,” he added.

The spread of the call set off alarms in La Moneda. According to Third, political committee ministers met emergency. There have been more than one meeting and Minister Vega has been included in them.
