Monkeypox: surveillance and regional epidemiological situation under debate

The General Directorate of Health Surveillance held a virtual meeting with professionals from Spain to discuss monkeypox, which has raised the alarm in several countries.

“Spekepox: Alert and response to Public Health Emergencies” was the topic that brought together exponents from Paraguay and Spain to discuss the current epidemiological situation of this disease that is in clear expansion, especially in European countries.

The virtual meeting was led by the head of Health Surveillance, Guillermo Sequera, who announced the surveillance of monkeypox in Paraguay.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Romeo Montoya, advisor for Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health CDE/HA/PHE, PAHO/WHO office in Paraguay.

For her part, the epidemiologist, Berta Suarez Rodríguez, head of the Preparedness and Response Area at the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies of Spain, together with Bernardo Guzmán Herrador, head of the Preparedness and Response Service at the Coordination Center of Health Alerts and Emergencies of the aforementioned country, addressed the Alert and Response System for Public Health Emergencies and the National Alert and Preparedness Plan System; as well as, on the detection and current epidemiological situation of the monkeypox alert in Spain.

It is worth mentioning that to date no case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the country. On June 14, the Ministry of Health ruled out a suspect, belonging to a 33-year-old patient, who returned to the country from Mozambique and had skin lesions.

Monkeypox causes fever, severe pain in the head, joints, muscles, and back, swollen lymph nodes, and a blistering rash that progresses to pustules.
