“He is a person who lived with HIV, was under treatment and noticed these injuries and sought medical attention and from there this whole series of events was triggered,” Adrián Camacho, a specialist from the Ministry of Health, explained at a press conference.
The state agency has already traced the patient’s contacts, to establish a possible chain of contagion and prevent the spread of the disease.
“In conjunction with the State Health Secretariat, we were notified from the first minutes that we had the suspicion and the necessary measures of epidemiological fence and follow-up of contacts of this patient were carried out,” explained the state official.
The announcement of the new case in Nuevo León adds to the two recent cases detected in the State of Mexico, and which were reported this Wednesday.
Recommendations for health personnel
• Wash hands with soap and water after checking each patient.
• Reinforce adherence to standard, contact, and droplet precautions in outpatient and hospital care for suspected, probable, or confirmed cases.
• Health personnel who have treated a confirmed case must remain vigilant for the appearance of symptoms suggestive of monkeypox during the following 21 days.
• Medical staff who have been contacts of the case do not need to be quarantined.
• Rapid isolation of a suspected or confirmed case in a single room with adequate ventilation is recommended, if single rooms are not available, allowing a minimum distance of 1.5 m between patients.
• A bandage, sheet, or gown may be used to cover injuries to minimize contact.
• Recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) includes gloves, gown, medical mask, and eye protection.
In the case of aerosol-generating procedures, it is required to use a mask for bioparticles (example N95).
• Case isolation should continue until symptoms resolve.
