The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) has among its negotiating priorities with China to achieve the authorization for the export of tripe or bovine stomachs and also bovine tonguesproducts that were left out of the export protocol with that country established in 2018, Minister Fernando Mattos reported.
Uruguay, regarding the official policy of advancing towards a better insertion of its exports in international markets, has just carried out the first shipment of 300 tons of bovine tongue to Japan.
Currently Uruguay exports mondongo to several destinations, the main one being Hong Kongwas indicated from the National Meat Institute (INAC).
In 2021 Hong Kong received 85% of mondongo’s external placements, however so far in 2022 that share has fallen to 45%. This year, in addition, 35% was exported to the European Union, 10% to Latin American countries and 10% to African countries.
The placements achieve a value ranging from US$1,500 to US$2,000 per ton.
leading market
So far in 2022, China captured 64% of the volume of beef cuts that Uruguay exported, demanding 294,719 tons of carcass weight. In foreign currency income, business with China meant this year, as of November 12, US$ 1,330 million, 57% of the total that entered the country for exports of bovine meat.

The Uruguayan mondongo reaches various markets.
Mattos made the announcement at a press conference, called to report on the signing of the protocol for the export of Uruguayan sorghum to China, which took place this Tuesday with the presence of the Chinese ambassador in Uruguay, Wang Gang.
Uruguay was authorized to export sorghum to the Asian giant, both for animal and human consumption.
Planting of this crop is beginning and, according to the minister’s estimate, in the next harvest (which will take place the following autumn) production could already be exported.
“The list is long with China. We are advancing product by product, establishing priorities. But that strengthens the commercial relationship with this country, our main commercial partner,” Mattos said.
According to him, the negotiations between the MGAP and the General Administration of Customs of China (GAC) have been very positive and important, mainly “for the productive diversification of Uruguay.”
