Santa Cruz de Mompox lived one of his most emotional and symbolic nights of Holy Week: the traditional funeral guardian of Holy Wednesday. An act loaded with solemnity and memory, in which their own and visitors congregate in the cemetery of the people to pay tribute to the deceased with funeral marches and floral offerings.
In dialogue with RCN Radio, Juan Espinosa, president of Corposanta, explained that this ceremony is carried out “in memory of all the deceased, musicians, Nazarenes and who made possible the traditions that survive today in the municipality.”

According to Espinosa, this custom, mixes spirituality with music. “We interpret Mompocinas and French marches that only sound during Good Friday. It is a way of remembering and keeping those who left us alive,” he said.
Music occupies a central place in this commemoration. Ligio Arce, teacher of the Mompox Band Association, explained that this year four marches were interpreted: Il n’est plus, the immortals, the death of the gods and sad memories, the latter of local origin.

“65 musicians participated, from 16 -year -old to veterans from almost 80. It is a way of keeping Mompoxina’s musical heritage alive,” he said.

The day also included the visit to the cemetery by the families, who clean the tombs of their loved ones and adorn them with flowers and candles. Father Albeiro Arroyo, pastor of the Church of Santa Cruz de Mompox, highlighted the importance of this gesture as an act of faith and memory.
“Here people who lived Holy Week are buried and today we remember them. It is a space where architecture, history and devotion meet,” he said.
In addition, the priest recalled that this tradition is part of the cultural DNA of the people and that Holy Wednesday is a spiritual preparation for the Easter Triduum. “From this place where memory rests, we celebrate hope in the resurrection,” he said.
The Momposina Holy Week with the Eucharist of Holy Thursday, visits to the monuments and processions that will culminate on resurrection Sunday, in a unique celebration that combines devotion, history and music with its own identity.
