Dozens of people attended a small church in Uvalde (Texas) yesterday to pray for the 19 children and two adults who died the day before in a shooting by a teenager at a local elementary school.
That city of about 15,000 inhabitants, located 80 km from Mexico, was until a few hours ago one of those typical US places without history. A layout of perpendicular and parallel streets dotted with shopping malls, gas stations and fast food chains.
But on Tuesday around noon, Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old boy, broke into the school Robb Elementary School with two assault rifles, locked himself in a classroom and opened fire on two teachers and 19 students, before being shot dead by police.
The massacre, the worst in a school in the country for a decade, it shook a quiet town and plunged it into a mixture of incomprehension and anger.

“I have felt horror and pain. knew the victims. I’m still in shock,” says that teacher who worked at Robb School until she retired two years ago.
“I pray for everyone,” adds this city resident, who pays tribute to the two teachers who died in the attack. “When you teach in a classroom, it’s your job to protect the kids, and they went above and beyond what was expected of them,” she says.
“Too many times”
A few meters away, Rosie Buantel is fed up with shootings happening over and over again in the United States. “I am sad and angry at our government for not doing more to control guns,” she says after leaving mass.
“We have been through this too many times, and nothing is done, it continues to be debated,” he says.
Eddie, a resident of Uvalde who does not want to give his last name, is also outraged by Tuesday’s massacre. “I have come to pay tribute and also to press for a change in the laws so that guns do not end up in the hands of children,” he says after laying some flowers near the Robb school, surrounded by the Police.
In a city in turmoil that yesterday seemed to wake up in slow motion, dozens of people have gathered in a municipal center where they receive psychological support.
The day before, several relatives and friends of the victims of the attack had to wait for hours to find out what had happened to their loved ones.
In front of the municipal center, under the heat of the Texas noon, groups of adults and children chat, enter and leave, before the gaze of numerous police officers.
Volunteer psychologist Iveth Pacheco has traveled from San Antonio, some 120 km east of Uvalde, to offer her support to those in need.

The author of the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, announced on Facebook that he was going to attack a school about 15 minutes before opening fire, state Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday, adding that the weapon used was an AR-15 assault rifle.
The social network clarified that the attacker had posted these warnings as part of Facebook’s private messaging and therefore the messages were not discovered until after the tragedy.
According to Abbott, Salvador Ramos, 18, successively posted messages warning that he was going to shoot his grandmother, then another specifying that he had already done so.
