MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban singer-songwriter Miriam Ramos Heres was awarded the 2024 National Music Prize, according to was announced in a ceremony held at the Cuban Institute of Music this Wednesday.
The jury in charge of awarding the prize was chaired by the musician Pancho Amat and made up of Niurka González, Orlando Valle “Maraca”, José Manuel García and Augusto Blanca. All of them highlighted Ramos’s influence as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, actress and host of radio and television programs.
Throughout his career, Ramos has left an indelible mark on the Cuban music scene. Among his most notable works on radio are the programs No need for wingsdedicated to music and universal literature, and The Jazz Corner. His work in this medium earned him the Caracol Prize in 1999 for the program Thought.
In addition to her successful career in radio and television, Miriam Ramos has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinction Medal for National Culture, the Raúl Gómez García Medal and the 1999 Cubadisco Grand Prize. She has also obtained awards in the the Cuban Song Adolfo Guzman and in national festivals dedicated to musical creation.
On his Facebook profile, the Cuban playwright and critic Norge Espinosa celebrated that “finally” Miriam Ramos received the National Music Award. “He deserved it a long time ago, and it comes now, on the 60th anniversary of his debut as a soloist,” the poet also wrote. “What good news for Cuba and its music. The Cuban song is celebrating,” he added.
