Miriam Díaz: Merger of Minerd with Mescyt “is not a hopeful measure in the education sector”

Miriam Díaz: Fusión del Minerd con el Mescyt «no es una medida esperanzadora en el sector educación»

The sociologist and professor, Miriam Diaz Santanaexpressed this Friday its rejection of the proposal to unify the Ministries of Education (Minerd) and Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt) announced by the Government, in order to reduce public spending.

Díaz Santana explained that the merger of both institutions does not offer hope that this will improve the national education system or that resources can be reduced. Instead, in his opinion, it creates an impression of austerity that needs to be recast.

«I understand that it is not a hopeful measure in the education sector. Yes, it is true, many things can be argued. If it is a saving of resources, I doubt it. I am not going to deny it, but I doubt it, because the same employees of the same department will continue there. Ministry of Education “We are constantly looking for new institutions, both from the Higher Education and the Ministry of Education, which are always in need of more, because one of the complaints we always see is that there is a lack of people. What is being given is an impression of austerity to be refounded, and it seemed to me that perhaps many more institutions, medium and small, that are out there should have disappeared, because they simply do not justify themselves,” said the teacher.

He added that this merger imposes “an additional problem on a team that is extremely overloaded by a system that is impossible to manage.” “The public education system is slow, it does not move forward,” he said.

Miriam Díaz also described the recent results published by the Government on the progress of the basic indicators of the education system as regrettable.

“We cannot be celebrating such small things. It is a shame that the education system is functioning without established goals, which must be reviewed every year.”

Vice President who presides over the Education Cabinet values

In addition, the leader of the civic movement Citizen Participation (PC) considered it positive that President Luis Abinader has appointed Vice President Raquel Peña Rodríguez as president of the Education Cabinet.

“I applaud anything that can improve the system. I think the creation of the education cabinet is opportune and the appointment of the vice president sends a message that those of us interested in improving this system have been waiting for for some time,” said the sociologist.

The teacher stressed that Peña Rodríguez “has the accreditation and reputation of being a person focused on results.”

He also expressed his desire to see Education with a measurement system similar to that of the Central Bank for economic indicators.

Miriam Díaz Santana’s statements were offered during an interview on the television program «One+One»carried out by journalists Adalberto Grullon and Stalin Montero.
