Mirassol made history this Tuesday (2) in the Brazilian Championship. With the 2-0 victory over Vasco at the São Januário stadium, Leão da Alta became the first Series A debutant to guarantee a place in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.

Thanks to the triumph over Cruzmaltino, Mirassol reached 66 points with just one more round to go until the end of the competition, and secured at least fourth place, which gives them a direct place in the most important club competition on the continent.
This is not the first time that a Brazilian Series A debutant has qualified for an international competition in the year of their debut in the national competition (Grêmio Barueri, in 2009, and Cuiabá, in 2021, reached the Copa Sudamericana). However, it is the first time that a debutant has guaranteed himself in the Libertadores.
Victory over Vasco
Playing away from home, the team led by Rafael Guanaes relied on quick transitions to attack Fernando Diniz’s Vasco. Cruzmaltino, who had the exchange of passes as his main game foundation, found it difficult to open spaces in Leão’s well-positioned defense.
In this way, Mirassol only managed to secure victory in the final stage, when they began to physically overcome their opponents. At 24 minutes, Renato Marques opened the scoring. And, in stoppage time, Carlos Eduardo dribbled past Léo Jardim before shooting into an empty goal and giving the scorer final numbers.

In the duel between the tricolors in Porto Alegre, Fluminense counted on two goals from Venezuelan Soteldo to defeat Grêmio 2-1, André scored for the home team. For the Laranjeiras team, the triumph is of great importance to stay alive in the fight for a direct place in the next edition of the Libertadores.
