Minute by minute: Trump imposes tariffs on Mexico

The White House said Monday that it has noticed that Mexico is “seriously” with the executive order of President Donald Trump on tariffs, but that Canada has “misunderstood.”

Trump ordered generalized tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada and China, demanding that they slow the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants to the United States, starting a commercial war that could reduce global growth and envive inflation.

“The good news is that in our conversations during the weekend, one of the things we have noticed is that Mexicans are very serious about doing what President Trump said,” said the director of the National Economic Council of the Blanca, Kevin Hasset, in CNBC.

“The Canadians seem to have misunderstood the plain language of the executive order,” he added.

When asked what Canada and Mexico should do to lift their tariffs, Trump told journalists on Sunday that “they have to balance their trade, number one.”

“They have to stop the entry of people to our country … they have to stop the entry of people, and we have to stop the fentanyl. And that includes China,” Trump said.
