AREQUIPA, Peru – The General Directorate of Public Health of the province of Santiago de Cuba reported on Tuesday that tourists arriving in that province who have a “high risk” of contracting yellow fever will be vaccinated against the disease.
A statement from the entity, cited by the official newspaper Sierra Maestraindicates that the measure is supported by the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, which governs the immunization process, together with the Department of International Sanitary Control in this territory.
The fact has raised alarm bells even though the official press has indicated that Cuba has not had any transmission of yellow fever since 1904, and therefore “is not a nation at risk of spreading the disease.”
The document also highlights that the authorities have established contact with representatives of the Wingo Airlines and Copa, as well as the communication reference with Avianca.
“It was made clear that no Cuban traveler using this route to reach Nicaragua is required to present an international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever (…) Therefore, we maintain the same requirements for yellow fever vaccination as previously stated,” the text stresses.
Yellow fever is an acute hemorrhagic disease of viral origin, mosquito-borneIts symptoms are similar to those of other arboviruses (fever, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, etc.), although it usually causes jaundice, hence its name. It can cause serious illness and death in a small proportion of infected patients.
The current epidemiological situation on the island is complex, with an increase in the number of infections caused by dengue and Oropouche fever. This reality has even had an impact on tourists who vacation in the country.
In this regard, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported last week that at least ten European tourists who visited the island in July were infected with Oropouche fever.
A report from Europa Press It collects details from an ECDC report on communicable disease threats in the period between 27 July and 2 August.
According to the document, three new cases of the virus have been registered in Spain, all of them travelers from Cubaand another five in Italy.
