Minsal announces international coordination to detect possible new acute childhood hepatitis in Chile

Undersecretary of Public Health, Christopher Square, referred during this session to the new disease that has been diagnosed in the world, a class of severe acute childhood hepatitis discovered in Argentina. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been on alert after finding an outbreak in the United Kingdom.

Faced with this, the authority talked with Radio DNA, stating that as a country “we are coordinated with international agencies to have, first, a broad detection of suspected cases, and for that we are working with the Chilean Society of Pediatrics and the Chilean Society of Infectious Diseases.”

“We have delivered very clear guidelines regarding the obligation to report any suspicious case, which are then studied by the technical teams of the authority. We do not have an increase in cases of acute hepatitis, which in most cases is a disease mild, whose main cause is hepatitis-type viruses, is usually a condition that is benign in children and is relatively frequent,” added the Undersecretary of State.

Along the same lines, Cuadrado specified that “we have a significant number of children who are normally experiencing hepatitis. There are 30% of cases where one cannot normally find the cause of them. We are intensifying diagnostic capacity and guidelines so that the most exhaustive studies possible can be carried out to identify any anomalous pattern.

Possible rise in Covid-19 infections

Faced with a possible new rise in Covid-19 infections at the national level, the health authority explained that “after a large Omicron outbreak in January and February, we had consistently low figures until the week before last (April). Last week we had a stabilization of cases and that is the same this week, with the exception of Arica and Parinacota, where we had an increase but that is associated with the active search for cases, which is also linked to the opening of borders and the increase in mobility. The health authorities have intensified the search, which means that these people are put in isolation early.”

Although he specified that “one is waiting for there to be an increase in cases in winter. The important thing is that it is not associated with serious illnesses and that the health system can respond in a timely and adequate manner to anyone who has a clinical picture of Covid.”

For Cuadrado, the key so that this does not happen is in the vaccination plans and in the population continuing to be inoculated against Covid-19.

“The (vaccination) strategy is not something new, but has been done historically between primary care centers and municipalities, especially in cases of influenza or human papilloma in the school population. This channel has been established on a regular basis. We intensified. In the Metropolitan region we have 11 mobiles that we have deployed to support the municipalities to bring vaccination to schools. But above all we have intensified communication with mayors. It is primary care that is mobilized to bring vaccination to schools”, hill.
