Minsa updates the cases of Dengue, leishmaniasis, hantavirus, Malaria, Zika and Chikunguya

Based on the latest report issued by the Department of Epidemiology, the Ministry of Health (Minsa), reports on the updated cases to date of dengue, hantavirus, malaria, leishmaniasis and Chikunguya in the country.

The report highlights that there are 1,365 confirmed cases of dengue throughout the country, broken down as follows: 1,201 cases without warning signs; 157 with warning signs; 7 cases of severe dengue and no deaths have been registered.

The regions with the most positive cases are: Colón with 292 cases; Panama Metro 260 cases; West Panama with 170 cases; Bocas del Toro with 152 cases; North Panama with 131 cases; San Miguelito with 129 cases; Los Santos with 62 cases and Herrera with 60 cases.

The Ministry of Health (MINSA) reiterates the importance of keeping homes and work environment clean, checking door screens, windows and looking under sinks, since they are places where there may be breeding sites and eliminate them.

• Hantavirus

Regarding confirmed cases with Hantavirus, to date, thirteen (13) cases have been confirmed throughout the country; with Cardiopulmonary Syndrome due to hantavirus there are nine (9) cases (8 alive and 1 registered death in the province of Herrera) and with fever due to hantavirus with four (4) cases.

The registered cases, the date are the provinces of Herrera with six (6) cases; Los Santos with five (5) and Coclé with two (2 cases).

The Minsa emphasizes that people keep their homes and their surroundings clean, as well as the collected grains (such as rice and corn), store them and seal them to prevent the rodent from coming into contact with them and leaving their feces and urine in the surroundings. .

• Malaria

Regarding malaria cases, 3,668 accumulated cases have been confirmed so far in 2023; Currently, 104 patients are confirmed as active, with the Guna Yala region having 78 cases; Darién with 25 cases and Bocas del Toro that confirmed one (1) case with malaria, as the regions with confirmed cases as active, to date.

The Minsa continues to reinforce the strategies to mitigate the cases of Malaria in the country, the strategies for the promotion and prevention of malaria in these areas, distributing mosquito nets with chemicals and also, reinforcing the operational capacity and the supply of medicines against this disease throughout the country.

• Leishmaniasis, Chikunguya and Zika

Around the cases of Leishmanianis, there are 548 accumulated cases so far in 2023; of which there are 51 active cases, with 12 confirmed in Panama West; Coclé with 9 cases; 8 confirmed in Bocas del Toro; Ngäbe Buglé region, with 7 cases; Colón and Veraguas with 4 cases; being the regions with the most confirmed cases, to date.

Seven (7) cases of Chikungunya remain, distributed in the sectors of North Panama in Alcalde Díaz; San Miguelito, in the José Domingo Espinar sector; in West Panama, Burunga sector and in the metropolitan region, in El Chorrillo.

There have been no reported cases of Zika so far in 2023.
