The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa), through the National Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs, reported that it is following up on the statement issued by the company Unilever US, which refers to a voluntary withdrawal in the United States of batches of dry shampoos, selected due to the possible presence of benzene (also known as benzol, it is a colorless liquid with a sweet odour).
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a publication that references a consumer-level voluntary product recall of select lot codes of dry shampoo spray products produced before for the month of October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé due to potentially elevated levels of benzene.
According to the company, an independent health hazard evaluation, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in the tests would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.
Similarly, Unilever US is withdrawing these products as a precaution, although it indicates that they have received no reports of adverse events to date related to this withdrawal.
The recalled products were distributed throughout the United States, with retailers being notified to remove the aforementioned products from shelves.
An internal investigation identified the product release device (propellant) as the source of the benzene, and Unilever says it has worked with its propellant suppliers to address this issue.
According to the Minsa, the voluntary withdrawal is a precautionary practice carried out by companies to mitigate possible health risks, with the use of their products, even if they are potential.
