The Ministry of Health released a statement in which it clarified the situation of subclade K of influenza A H3N2, pointing out that this type of virus has not been identified in South America.
The entity specified that, although the virus is currently circulating in the northern hemisphere during its winter season, the climatic conditions of the region limit its massive spread.
Given the increase in travel at the end of the year, the Minsa indicated that epidemiological surveillance protocols have been activated to detect possible imported cases and strengthen the response capacity in health services.
The statement also highlighted that the available vaccines continue to be effective in preventing hospitalizations and severe conditions, especially in the vulnerable population.
Among the recommendations, the Minsa insisted that children under 5 years of age, older adults and people with comorbidities should be vaccinated in health facilities.
Finally, citizens were urged to maintain preventive measures during the festivities, such as hand washing and wearing a mask in case of respiratory symptoms. Likewise, those returning from Europe or the United States should be alert to any discomfort and go to the health center informing them of their travel history.
