The Ministry for the Penitentiary Service said that the cases of these 99 political prisoners were reviewed and they were granted precautionary measures as a “concrete expression of the State’s commitment to peace, dialogue and justice.”
The Ministry for the Penitentiary Service confirmed the release of 99 post-election prisoners on December 25, Christmas Day. The agency said that these people were detained “for their participation in the acts of violence and incitement to hatred, after the election day of July 28, 2024.”
The authorities explained that the justice system reviewed the cases and granted precautionary measures. In it release published on Instagram, they added that this is a “concrete expression of the State’s commitment to peace, dialogue and justice.”
Likewise, the Penitentiary Ministry indicated that these actions were directed by Nicolás Maduro to “guarantee unrestricted respect for human rights.”
The Penitentiary Ministry did not detail the names of those released or the detention centers where they were held. They also did not specify what precautionary measures these 99 people received. Some family members indicated that among those who received the benefit were three teenagers arrested in La Guaira.
Human rights organizations celebrated the release of these political prisoners; which they are verifying, but they urged the relevant authorities to release all those detained for political reasons, who exceed one thousand imprisoned.
Justice, Encounter and Forgiveness insisted that these releases confirm “that the deprivation of liberty has been used as an instrument of political persecution.”
