Residents of the city of Minneapolis, state of Minnesota, in the United States, took to the streets on Wednesday night (7), in protest over the death of US citizen Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. On Wednesday (7), Renee was shot by immigration officers inside her car.
The information is from Minnesota Star Tribune. According to the newspaper The New York Timesother places in the country also held protests.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said agents “were conducting targeted operations” when members of the community began trying to block the vehicles.
According to Tricia, the ICE agent “fired defensive shots” when the woman tried to run over the other agents who were involved in the action.
Former Vice President of the United States, Democrat Kamala Harris, classified the episode as “shocking”, in a post on social media, and criticized the argument defended by the White House.
“Many of us have seen the horrific and heartbreaking video, which makes clear that the Trump administration’s explanation of this shooting is pure manipulation. A full and fair investigation at the state level is absolutely necessary,” Kamala wrote.
Residents who witnessed the scene said that the agents were ordering the woman to get out of the vehicle.
Videos posted on social media show the crime from various angles. The agents approached the side of the vehicle and tried to open the driver’s door. She then accelerates and tries to drive away, when another agent fires shots at close range.
Operation
On Tuesday (6), the Department of National Security began a major migration offensive in the region, sending around 2,000 agents and officers to the operation.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for calm and said the Trump administration’s “recklessness cost someone their life.”
The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, mourned the death of the 37-year-old woman. “To the family: I’m sorry!” said Frey, disputing the Department of Homeland Security’s version that she had tried to run over the agents.
“Immigration agents are causing chaos in our city,” he said. “We demand that ICE leave the city and state immediately. We stand with the immigrant and refugee communities.”
On a social network, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that the agent acted in self-defense. According to him, images from the episode indicate that the driver tried to run over the agent in a “violent” and “deliberate” way.
