A 50-year-old individual, of “terrible social conduct and with multiple criminal records”, murdered “with the use of bladed weapons” his ex-partner, a minor of 17 years of age, in the community of Camalote, in Camagüey. municipality of Nuevitas, reported the Ministry of the Interior (Minint).

This is the fourth femicide so far this year in Cuba. Latest registered on January 30 in the province of Matanzas, where the lifeless body of a 36-year-old woman whose family had declared her missing two days earlier was found.
In Cuba there is no official record of femicides. The only figures available are kept by the feminist organizations Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo Cuba. According to these independent platforms, there were 34 gender-based murders in 202236 in 2021, and 32 in 2020.
The activists demand a law against Gender Violence and criticize the Cuban government for not classifying femicide as a crime in the new Penal Code, which came into force last December.
Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba again demanded last Wednesday the implementation of “effective mechanisms for the prevention of gender violence.”
