Ministry of Science and Technology promotes research for “early detection” of HPV

A researcher from the Ministry of Health indicated that after several studies they found that in communities and indigenous peoples there are “high cases of women with HPV and many of them that develop into cervical cancer.”


The Ministry of Science and Technology reported this Friday that it is promoting a project for the early detection of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in women. This project began in the state of Yaracuy and aims to expand to the entire country.

María Correnti, researcher at the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the Institute of Hematology and Oncology of the Ministry of Health, indicated that after different studies, among which the “approach” to different communities and indigenous peoples stand out, “high cases of women with HPV were recorded. and many of them that lead to cervical cancer”, however, offer greater details such as the real figures.

For her part, fertility gynecologist Yrama Baloa said that this type of cancer represents a “challenge” for public health in Venezuela, “being the second cause of gynecological death in women.”

“It is a public health problem and public health cannot be addressed solely from research but from prevention and that is why the call we make to understand the importance of preventing, raising awareness and sensitizing all our women daily,” she added. Baloa, cited in press release.

In the same way, he stated that there is an “increase in cases (of cervical cancer) in Venezuela, most related to the human papillomavirus.”

Meanwhile, the head of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the Institute of Hematology and Oncology of the Ministry of Health, Maira Ávila, said that in the Venezuelan female population “cases (of HPV) can be observed in quite young women, between the ages of 29 and 29. at 69 years of age.

The plan is financed by the National Fund for Science, Technology and Innovation (Fonacit) and is called “Consolidation of the Network of Studies on HPV and its relationship with neoplastic processes in the female population in Venezuela.”

In July of last year, health authorities announced the strengthening its immunization system through new agreements with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Provision of GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) Country Programs, including the procurement of vaccines against HPV and pneumococcus bacteria.
