Ministry of Justice will request $1.2 billion to create 500 courts in the country

This Monday, August 29, the Justice Minister Nestor Osunasaid during the forum ‘Perspectives on the Penitentiary and Prison Crisis: Challenges and Solutions’, held in association with the Externado University of Colombia, he spoke about some requests that he will make to the Ministry of Finance.

Mainly, he assured that he will ask the portfolio for 1.2 billion pesos to increase the number of judges by 2023. In this case, with the creation of 500 courts.

Osuna clarified that the objective of this idea is to bring justice closer to the citizenry and to the administration of justice. “For 2023 there are $6.8 billion, it seems a lot, but it is little compared to the budget, that addition of $1.2 billion would allow the Judicial Branch to create, in 2023, 500 more judicial offices, that is, increase the dimensions of the judicial power by 10%, this will be a strategy that will have to be combined with others to significantly increase the number of judges in the country and bring justice closer to the citizen“, he pointed out.

The head of portfolio also assured that restorative justice will allow the reparation of the victims. In this regard, he clarified that it is not that criminals are going to be released, but that They will supplement your full with repair.

Restorative justice seeks to complement and in some cases replace a part of the prison sentence, with a measure that leaves the victim who suffered a theft, damage, or injury satisfied and feels repaired.“, said.

He also pointed out that the repair can be economical, with community work, public apologies or a face to face between the aggressor and the victims.
