The Ministry of Health and the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) initiated meetings for an agreement in favor of food sovereignty, with a public health and social justice approach. The objective is to structurally address the country’s nutritional problems, particularly obesity and malnutrition in vulnerable communities, the agency reported in a statement. He stressed that in the first meeting, the transformation of the food system must respond to a policy based on scientific evidence, which prioritizes the health of the population. Among the central themes, the strategies for the consumption of healthy and culturally adequate foods, applied research with local ingredients, and the construction of production and distribution models that strengthen national food sovereignty. Meanwhile, the UAM reaffirmed its willingness to articulate its academic and scientific capacity with the objectives of that strategy, which links health, food and sustainable development. The initiative includes the active participation of students, researchers and communities so that the solutions respond to the real needs of the country and not to external interests, he said.
